Lyme Regis

Historic Seaside Town

The Royal Lion Hotel is located in the centre of the beautiful coastal town of Lyme Regis. Known as “the Pearl of Dorset”, Lyme Regis offers a rich cultural experience; famous for its geology, sublime cliffs and beaches noted for their fossils.

The cliffs are part of the Heritage ‘Jurassic’ Coast, a World Heritage Site – set against beautiful countryside. The town is famous for being featured in Jane Austen’s novel, “Persuasion,” and for being the location of the novel (and subsequent film, starring Meryl Streep), “The French Lieutenant’s Woman.”

Explore the Pearl of Dorset

In addition to The Royal Lion Hotel, with its own on-site car park and leisure facilities, the main street features many gift shops and exclusive boutiques, as well as a mini supermarket and pharmacy.

Lyme Regis is less than 25miles east of the capital city of Devon, Exeter, should you wish to explore further afield. In addition to shops, you can also pay a visit to the Lyme Regis Museum, the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, see the Cobb (the setting for “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”) and the Town Mill.

Local Events

Lyme Regis also has a number of events held annually such as the Lyme Regis Carnival and Regatta, the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival and Mary Anning Day, the Christmas Tree Festival, and the town’s Lifeboat Week featuring ‘congar cuddling’ to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
